The Short Count: Joel Reitsma

Joel recently wrote about his experience with The Long Count’s group mind – and now he’s back with answers to our Short Count questions.  Also, we’ve learned that his favorite Saturday morning-style cartoon was “Recess.”  Says Joel, “I always watched it because it was very funny, but one of the main kids, TJ, reminded me of me – even the way he dressed. I was homeschooled and didn’t have recess, but I imagined that’s the way I would have been if I did have recess.”  We imagine that had Joel had recess, he would have always been first picked for the game of awesome.

1. In a word, today I feel: Repaired

2. I am a theatre artist because: I am a naturally curious person, and I find a lot of excitement when I am learning something that surprises me. Being an actor gives me a chance to find out more about myself and how I relate with others around me. The result is almost always endlessly exciting.

3. I am a theatre artist in Chicago because: The humble attitude of Chicago’s theatre. I think this is most important. Ego blinds our art and makes it selfish.

4. In regards to The Long Count:

            a) Today, I am most excited about:

The environment that we have been holding and building and sharing in our imaginations for 5 weeks is starting to manifest itself in physical form!

            b) Today, I am asking myself this question:

What would it feel like to get eaten by something stronger than you?

5. Five years ago, I thought: Stay here and be a GM Plant floor worker? Or move away to everything unfamiliar and be an Actor?

6. Five years from now, I: will be 28 and very surprised and proud of how far I have come.

7. In a word, how do we build a future from a present we didn’t expect? Eagerly.
